NHS004: Introduction to Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research (IN-PERSON) In-Person

Preparatory work

Please ensure you read the set article prior to attending, using the CASP checklist as a guide. These are available as attachments in the box at the foot of this page but will also be sent to you 2 days prior to the workshop. The article will form the focus of our group discussion.

There are two narrated PowerPoints to watch prior to the workshop, plus an optional video. These provide essential information for the session and will improve your understanding and knowledge of critical appraisal of qualitative research. The preparatory elearning can be accessed here: https://media.kcl.ac.uk/playlist/dedicated/1_gyxhm7o3/

  • Introduction to definitions of critical appraisal and qualitative research [08:55]

Course availability

Open to all. Places are limited and are on a first come, first served basis but the session is repeated twice each month.

 

Target group

NHS staff who require help, advice and support to improve their critical appraisal skills and knowledge of qualitative research.

 

Overall aim

The aim of this workshop is to increase your confidence in applying critical appraisal skills to published research. It will introduce you to methods of critical appraisal through a guided discussion of a piece of qualitative research.

 

Key areas

Key areas covered in the workshop will include:

  • Using a CASP checklist to identify key aspects of qualitative research
  • Working as a group to discuss and appraise a piece of qualitative research

 

Format

The online workshop will be used to critically appraise the set article using a CASP checklist. This is available here as an attachment but will also be sent to you 2 days prior to the workshop. These workshops rely upon group discussion so please ensure you have done the necessary preparation.

 

Delivery

This session will be delivered in-person in New Hunts House Library (NHH 2.10).
